Perfect Storm for PS3 in Japan?

Not sure if anyone else noticed, but the PS3 has been outselling the Wii in Japan. Despite strong sales of Super Mario Galaxy, the PS3 has outsold the Wii for the second week in a row, according to Gamasutra.

Apparently, this is due to a combination of the release of the 40GB model in Japan, as well as strong sales Umbrella Chronicles and… Dynasty Warriors 6? According to Gamasutra’s numbers, it sold 188,000, almost matching Mario Party DS and soundly beating out Super Mario Galaxy.

Should I really be taking the Japanese video game industry seriously, anymore? Granted, I am a fan of the Dynasty Warriors series, but besides Gundam, there hasn’t been anything interesting in the series since Dynasty Warriors 4, and some would argue there’s not been anything worth buying since 2.

This is the same market that continuously votes Final Fantasy VII as the best game ever. Come on! That overwrought, poorly-ended game? Listen, I can understand if games like Halo or Gears of War don’t catch on over there, but when the pinnacle of the Japanese game industry is Dynasty Warriors 6? On PS3? WTF?

I’d wager that someone in Japan would say the same about Grand Theft Auto, which hasn’t sold well there in the past and sold here extremely well.

Or they could say it about anything for the 360 except the blue dragon RPG that sold well briefly there on the 360.
