NCsoft Thanks The Players with City of Heroes Goodies

COHEarlier this week NCsoft announced a deal where it was buying Cryptic’s entire share of the City of Heroes MMO to allow Cryptic Studios to focus on other projects. The international MMO powerhouse isn’t just buying the game and taking it away from the developers, either. It turns out just about every developer in Cryptic that was working on CoH has moved to NCsoft as part of the deal. Unlike other MMOs that have changed hands, CoH doesn’t seem to be in dire straits and with the developer base preserved it doesn’t look like there will be any downsides.

To the contrary, NCsoft all on its own has decided to shower gifts on the City of Heroes populace. What kind of gifts? The retail wall between City of Heroes and City of Villains factions has been removed — you no longer have to purchase both retail games to get access to both factions as either one will do. What else is being given?

Other incentives include a complete debt wipe after the launch of the Episode 11: A Stitch In Time update, along with a Supergroup prestige bonus of 20,000 per character, amounting to up to 3,000,000. That’s relatively insane.

I spent some time in COH in a free trail a while back but didn’t find enough there to keep my attention. Back then there wasn’t any kind of crafting or real economy per se, and that kind of thing is appealing to me in MMO’s. But I will say one thing: Spooooon!
