Harmonix iPod Game ‘Phase’

PhaseDo you miss Harmonix rhythm games that you didn’t have to buy a guitar or other instruments to play? Their PS2 games Frequency and Amplitude might not have sold huge numbers but they did build the basics of their notes-down-a-stream format that came to fruition in Guitar Hero. Harmonix has released a new iPod game on iTunes called Phase.

Phase is a rhythm game that more than a little bit resembles the old PS2 rhythm games of the not-too-distant past, and it does something those games couldn’t. MTV’s First Look at the title confirms the “your music is the game” subtitle, noting that it builds levels from music you add to a specially named playlist. Sounds like a neat idea.

We could use a PSP, 360, and PS3 game that did this given those machines’ storage and music playback capabilities. Does the Wii play digital music files on its SD card reader?

Seen on Joystiq, and MTV.com.

I’m sure I could listen to music on my Wii, in glorious STEREO sound!

Ooh your surround system is sweeeeet. The scream of Warhawk engines as they flew by as I ran for cover on the ground made my hair stand up when I was visiting.

Yes, the Wii is able to play MP3s from the SD Card, provided the software is designed to access them. Excite Truck will do it, and the Wii’s Photo Channel will as well.

This looks interesting, I’ll have to see how it is and maybe I’ll pick it up for my iPod.

The preview of the game in the iTunes Store shows a game that looks a lot like a Guitar Hero game, but with a simpler presentation and only three strings, presumably for the REW, select, and FWD buttons.
