God of War 3 Officially Announced, Barlog Not Involved

Anyone that owns a PS3 or is a die hard Sony fan, already knew that a God of War III game would be released. It was inevitable after the success of the first two. A company knows when it has something good on its hands. And so, God of War III has officially been announced by Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA) for the PS3.

This news is somewhat tempered by the fact that the project will not have Cory Barlog working on it. Barlog, the director of God of War II was preaching several months ago about how great it would be to have God of War running at 1080p and Force Feedback controllers. Barlog has left SCEA, and it is not sure under what terms.

Barlog did not post any statements through his blog, and SCEA has not made and statements about his departure and whether it was mutual, him leaving or a firing. This would be the second key person to leave the God of War franchise as David Jaffe left SCEA after 14 years of employment.

So if Ratchet and Clank cannot sell the PS3, is God of War III, the new big title to get that distinction. I will say that the thought of a used PS3 in a year or so with God of War III makes me warm all over. And yes it has to be used, because I want backwards compatibility.

Joe means SCEA not Activision there. :-)

I don’t expect to see God of War III until 2009.

I’ve been waiting to see where Cory Barlog lands. In the behind the scenes DVD that shipped with God of War II he makes it pretty clear that working under David Jaffe was extremely tough, partially because of the high-profile and high-budget nature of God of War I where he was I think an art director and partially because of who David Jaffe is, so I’m not sure he’d go and work for him again.

Then again, the devil you know…

Was Barlog the mental midget who kept dropping the f-bomb in the bonus materials on the first God of War?

I’m sure Sony can find somebody else to glue spikes to minotaurs, if Barlog and Jaffe find themselves suddenly creatively bankrupt in that area.

    Bwahaha glue spikes to minotaurs!

I haven’t seen the GoW-1 behind the scenes footage, but Jaffe is known for having a highly unpublishable vocabulary, so I’m guessing it would be him you saw. Jaffe was in charge of God of War 1.

Sorry readers, I posted the wrong version of the story. When I was typing the story, I read Santa Monica, and Activision went into my brain. I corrected it in a revision but posted the original draft.

No, I can recognize Jaffe… although he is rather ripe most of the time, what I most recall about his commentary was how fatigued and depressed he was about God of War. It was quite sad.

The guy I think was Barlog went on and on about God of War being “f-ing rad” like some kind of tenth grade dropout.

Both did talk at length about how inventive and fresh their designs were, which instantly annoyed me since, as I said, it’s just spikes glued to minotaurs. The phrase “new IP” barely applies.
