GameFly Beta Testing Trade-In Program

After we recorded last night’s podcast I decided I would shuffle around my GameFly queue to bring a couple of games we discussed up to the top of the list. Upon surfing to GameFly I stumbled across a new program to bring GameFly into the highly profitable used game marketplace. They’re now beta testing a trade-in program. Sounds like a great idea, right? Yes, but only on a couple of conditions.
Punch in your UPC code or do a title search and you’ll get a quote. You can only turn in games in good working condition with the original manual and box and the price quotes have a five-day lifespan. Print the presented packing slip, ship out your game, and the value offered will be added to your account.
Sounds like a great idea right? I’d agree on two conditions: that they sell them separately from their pre-rented stock and that they don’t rent the traded-in games out. I think the “Keep It” feature of GameFly is one of the best deals around because not only does it get you a typically near-perfect-condition game but the case and manual are brand new, taken from the game when it is first bought by GameFly itself. If they start sending out the traded-in games the physical quality of the games will plummet along with the desire to buy them because of the chance you’d be taking on getting a poor case and manual.
GameFly’s at a distinct disadvantage here, because once you ship the game to them they can’t easily refuse to honor the price quote if they think you stretched the truth about the condition of the disc, manual, or case. We’ll have to see how it goes.
