EA In The Red But 360 Game Sales Light The Way
Last week’s Gamers With Jobs podcast episode 58 touched on how EA lost money in its most recent financial filing, but other aspects of the filing show very clearly where EA’s money is coming from.
EA didn’t bet big on the Wii the way, say, Ubisoft did, so they saw the majority of their sales come from Microsoft’s machine. Xbox 360 titles made $218 million for the publishing behemoth while all of the other platforms combined made them $217 million. That’s PS2, Wii, DS, PSP and PS3 sales all put together. Amazing, no?
One of the GWJers commented what the rest were no doubt thinking: “If I were them I would be asking myself why on earth am I writing a single line of PS3 code? Get those guys on a Wii game to come out in six months to a year and cash in, even if it’s not great.”
What’s an EA game that’s been simultaneously released on almost every platform (PSP was held back by a week) so we can see what’s gone on since that year closed? Why it’s The Simpsons Game. A nice T-rated game should do well on the Wii especially given the brand recognition and large demographic the franchise appeals to, right?
From a vgchartz.com query:
PSP 10k (released about one week later than the other versions October 30th release)
DS 20k
PS3 30k
PS2 50k
Wii 50k
X360 90k
We’re looking at probably two weeks of sales in this query, and you can already see something of a trend ahead of Black Friday sales. Sure it’s strong on the Wii, but that right there would make me think the Xbox 360 has the lead SKU. Anything can happen over the holidays, especially with a title with this well-known of a license, so maybe we should come back to this in January and see what we see.
