Custom XMB Sorting In Firmware 2.00
PS3Fanboy ran a short bit from ThreeSpeech on making folders in the PS3 XMB as part of their 2.00 firmware coverage yesterday. After having ridiculous amounts of fun filling my friends full of lead and rocket shrapnel and getting run down by speeding jeeps in Warhawk last night I gave it a try. While PS3Fanboy focused on videos, it turns out you can do the same thing for music, images, and games. There’s also a neat trick I stumbled across that makes it even easier to group big collections of items together. Either way, what you get is the ability custom sort your media and games in the XMB. Here’s how you do it.
It’s part of the new sorting options for items in the XMB, namely the Sort By Album option. We’ll use videos as our example just for clarity’s sake.
1. Go to the Video column of the XMB.
2. Scroll down to any particular video. Push Triangle, scroll down to Information, and push X.
3. Scroll down to the Album field and push X to edit the name. Enter a name, e.g. “Movie Trailer”.
4. Push circle to go back to the video column.
5. Push triangle, scroll up to Group Content, and push to the right. Select “By Album” from the choices of “By Title”, “By Month”, “By Album” and “All” and push X. A folder for the album you just named is automatically displayed. Items without an Album set will be in an “Unknown” folder.
6. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to file all items into that particular Album.
This sounds pretty tedious, but there’s a nifty shortcut I figured out. Instead of setting all of your items with a long and descriptive album name, set them to something very short, like a single letter “a”. The items will all be filed in the “a” album folder, and once they’re all in place, do the following.
1. Navigate to the “a” folder.
2. Push triangle and move down to Information, push X. Push X on the Album name and change it to the full name of what you want it to be called. Presto! All of the items in the album folder have had their album name changed.
This way you can take those vacation videos and not have to type “2007 Vacation” over and over and over again on each of them. Not only does this get us custom sorting in the XMB, but it also gives us a way to prevent the obnoxiously loud game music from blaring when the system boots up to the Game column of the XMB by putting the game in an album folder. That just about takes care of two of my old firmware pet peeves on the PS3.
