We announced both of our contest winner, Sifer2400 winning the RedBeard Metal Skin and Mark Crawford answering last week’s trivia question correctly. He got a copy of Mutant Storm Empire and Half Life 2.
Looking at what we were playing, Joe was playing through Half Life 2 all over again, while also delving back into the Crysis demo which is full of cool things to do with the new physics engine. He also lamented the fact that Guitar Hero 3 is a steaming pile of horribleness. He also played through Alpha Prime for a review and thought it was okay, but had a long way to go. Stephen on the other hand was focusing on one game, and that was Dementium: The Ward on the DS. He was really enjoying it and would have the rest of his review up soon.
We focused on the news that Microsoft would be offering original Xbox games to 360 users for a tidy sum of 1200 points ($15.00). Joe felt that it was a weird idea considering that the games can be purchased in the store, used for about $10. Stephen thought it was an okay idea, but that maybe this was just an eventual step to no one offering backwards compatibilty in the next round of consoles. We also felt that the people that have the Arcade, or the Core system would be out of luck. Joe mentions that they should have put achievements in the game to help promote the downloading of the games.
Kaz Hirai of Sony fame made a comment that let Joe to believe that Sony may bring back the 20 and 60GB PS3s at some point. He question the intellegence of the marketing department at Sony. Stephen looked at it as possible offhand remark, which is probably more likely, but you just never seem to know about Sony. Sony also posted great sales numbers in Japan with the launch of the 40GB PS3. Stephen felt it was a good sign for the belagured PS3, while Joe made mention of how the handhelds seem to be beating all the consoles in sales.
Joe made mention of the fact that the 360 has been deemed the lead development platform for Fallout 3, shoving another dagger into his support for this game. His main concern was that the PC might get a half assed port of the game. Stephen made mention of the fact that the development tools for the 360 are very powerful and easy to move code to the PC side of the equation.
We wondered allow whether Marvel Universe online was about to be killed by Microsoft. Rumor was running around that Microsoft was cutting a first party title and Cryptic was the only studio that did not respond for comment.
Finally we looked at the Wii dropping MP3 support for an already rather useless feature for the even less friendly MP4 format. Joe was under the impression that you could play MP3s off of a disc. Stephen let him know that this was not what the feature was about and that it was a rather useless feature.
