Vampire: Bloodlines Community Continues to Better Original Game
For the uninitiated, Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines was released in November of 2004. It was a game that was held up for several months, because it used the Source engine and by rule, could not be released by Troika until Half-Life 2 was released. The game was released to good, but not great reviews, due to extreme bugs in the game.
Abandoned by the developers after one patch, and developers that closed their doors shortly after the game was released, the community at large has come together to fix this game. One group has taken it upon themselves not only to update the game and fix the bugs, but he also offers a different patch that play balances the game and adds new dialog options and trees as well as more balanced weapon placement.
This is the kind of thing that I love to see happen in the gaming community. When the community comes along and decides to fix the game out of a labor of love. And believe me, the patches do make the game a lot better to play. I have always been a big fan of Vampire: Bloodlines from its launch, bugs and all, but replaying the game with all of the fixes in place has made for an extremely better release.
And it is not just one patch. They have released over two dozen updates to the game over the last 18 months. A lot of people that have played the game have given their thanks to the game, but I felt that it should be acknowledged on a larger scale. And a general thanks to all those that go above and beyond to fix games that companies leave unfixed. Like the guys at Widescreengamingforums.com that released a Widescreen cropping fix for Bioshock before 2K Games did. Or the guys that took up the mantle to fix Falcon 4.0 for many years until the formed a company and got the rights to re-release the game with all of their fixes.
So when you download these patches, take some time to think about what it takes to put into these fixes and that most are not making a dime off of the work. And if you are interested in seeing more of the work from the TessMage crew, you can check out their site. Be warned that it is not safe for work or minors due to some of the skins that they offer for games on the PC.
