The $50 Xbox HDMI Rip-off and How To Avoid It
Much like the $100 wi-fi adapter, and the $50 wireless controller, the $50 HDMI cable with audio dongle is, well, basically a rip-off. Well, I noticed that Xbox-scene.com had posted a simple but effective means of circumventing the need for the rip-off cable.
This method was posted on the “Chad Ledford” blog and allows one to plug in a regular, $10 HDMI cable AND the standard AV cable at the same time, which completely negates the need for the separate audio dongle provided by the over-priced first-party HDMI cable.
Because the HDMI and component A/V cable slots are so close to one another, and the component A/V casing is so thick, you cannot have both plugged in at the same time.
So the question remains, how can we stick it to the man and achieve HDMI video and Digital Optical audio without paying Microsoft $50.
First, purchase a HDMI cable for less than $10
Second, remove the plastic casing from the standard A/V cable. I did this by wedging a knife between the slit in the plastic casing and separating the two sides. See the pictures … for the finished product.
