Sorry PS3, Monster Hunter 3 Only On Wii

Capcom has confirmed to the press that the newest console version of Monster Hunter in development will be a Wii exclusive. Monster Hunter 3 was originally slated for the PlayStation 3 but has been moved “due to high development cost of titles for PS3″.

Even though Monster Hunter had online play back on the PS2 — I still have the beta disc kicking around somewhere — its Japanese PS2 sequels never made it to the US market. The PSP versions of the game, which have typically been identical to the PS2 versions that never made it to the US, only sport ad-hoc (local) wireless multiplayer, which has been a telltale weakness of the series and, in my opinion, kept it from getting much traction in the US.

Will we get online multiplayer on the Wii? Are you kidding? They’re doing this to save money, and if they gave away online multiplayer for free in this game, who would play their subscription MMO version of Monster Hunter? That would be Monster Hunter Frontier already out in Japan and maybe Korea by now.

I’d love to be proven wrong. Heck, a well-done online multiplayer Monster Hunter would be super-addictive and could even sell me one of those little white wave-your-arms-around boxes. That’s how badly I and many others wanted online multiplayer for Monster Hunter Freedom 2 on the PSP — but I’m not going to hold my breath.

“They’re doing this to save money,”

To be fair, one can’t really make this assumption. The fact that they mention high development costs on PS3 as the reason for the move does not exactly mean they are trying to save money. It could just as easily mean that a PS3 project was proving impossible to complete within the allotted budget. Maybe they wanted to spend 5 million on the game and realized it couldn’t be done on PS3. Or perhaps they realized the same amount of money would enable them to make a bigger/better game on Wii. We just don’t know.

More likely, they found that the game they were planning did not need a monster like the PS3 under it, and would work just fine on the Wii, with an installed base to drive sales to boot. It’s always cost-benefit in a business decision.
