SOCOM Tactical Strike Is Gold, Looking Good
I basically ignored the two well-received and popular SOCOM US NAVY SEALs titles on the PSP in Fireteam Bravo 1 and 2 simply because if I wanted to play a SOCOM shooter I could do so on my PS2 or 60GB PS3. I’m happy to see SOCOM Tactical Strike approaching the franchise from an actually tactical direction in a game unique to the series and ideally suited to the handheld’s controls. This one’s also coming from a developer new to the series, Slant Six.
Some detailed hands-on information from PSPFanboy shows that the game is about tactics and strategy and while yes you’re taking out the bad guys you’re not pointing the gun and shooting them yourself. You’ll be commanding your squad of four SEALs broken into two teams of two soldiers, ensuring they have the element of surprise wherever possible and stay behind cover to get the upper hand before the first shot is fired. The hands-on article goes into lots more detail that I won’t cover here, but it’s looking very good to me as another less twitchy action title on the PSP.
The game looks like another signature title for the PSP with the processor opened up to its full 333Mhz power, “incredibly thorough single-player campaign”, four-player online play with headset support, and visuals that the PSPFanboy previewer said the following about:
Yes, we’re saying it looks even better than God of War: Chains of Olympus. The level of detail is incredible: the lush jungles, the overgrown flora, and the incredible lighting and smoke effects look impeccable on the PSP screen.
In the PlayStation Blog announcement that the game has gone gold they also revealed a bit of international war aficionado fan service. You can field teams from 8 additional Special Forces groups around the world featuring localized voices, authentic weaponry, and uniforms:
If you are a fan of the British SAS, the Australian SAS-R or the Korean 707th Special Missions Battalion, this is your chance to take a team into the field!
SOCOM Tactical Strike is headed for retail on November 6th, and Slant Six’s next game will be the a PSN version of SOCOM for the PS3 called SOCOM Confrontation.
