Older PS3 Models to Get Bundles

PS3 20GB what about me

With the 80GB PS3 now at the $499 price point, folks have wondered what’s going to happen to the 60GB models still kicking around and, rarer still, the 20GB PS3′s that some folks still seem to be able to find here and there. The answer is: nothing.

Sony has no plans to cut the prices on those discontinued models of the PS3, but retailers really need to get them the heck outa the store. PS3Fanboy details what some retailers are doing to move those units out, and since both the 60GB and 20GB models have hardware backwards compatibility here in the US, you’d best take advantage of them if you’re shopping for a PS3.

Walmart.com, for example, is bundling one free game and a Blu-ray remote with the 60GB system (making it a far better deal than the 80GB, in our opinion). Retail Best Buy stores will soon run a promotion where you can get a free copy of Heavenly Sword (or Lair, if you so dare) and an extra controller with the 60GB system.

An extra controller and Heavenly Sword with a 60GB PS3 for $499? That’s $100 retail in add-ons right there!

I know what they can do with those PS3′s. Isn’t there a place out in the desert where a few million E.T. game cartridges are buried? I’m sure they can dig a hole nearby and pile em in!

That has to be a tempting price for a lot of people. I remember when the PS3 launched with the 20GB and 60GB version and it was as if the 20GB version had the plague. Same thing with the 360. Now, the 20GB version is actually superior to every currently manufactured model, because of the hardware backwards compatibility, and cheaper to boot. It’s a no-brainer if you want a PS3 to go with this model.
