Mass Effect: Revelation Book Review

With Mass Effect coming in November, I knew a bit about the game, but not enough to really get a grasp on what the game was about, beyond it dealing with space and tracking down an ancient artifact. But while I was at Borders Books the other day, I ran across a book entitled Mass Effect: Revelations. Upon reading the jacket notes, I found out that it was a prequel book to the Mass Effect game, so I figured I would check it out and see if it helped with understanding what will happen in the game.
The game starts off by introducing us to a great war hero in Admiral John Grissom. He is a great figure in the Alliance (the human military) and is sent out to check out an attack on a far reaching space station. This becomes the basis for humanity’s first contact with a species outside of our own. It also starts a war between the humans and the species encountered, the Turians.
EDIT: Fixed the story to represent the correct race. The war was with the Turians rather than the Batavians.
Jumping 10 years in advance, we find the main hero of the story, David Anderson, being called in with his crew to find out what happened at a distant research facility. The massacre found is eerily similar to the assault on the space station that was attacked several years earlier. And after some research, they found out that one of the people one the station was unaccounted for upon checking the bodies. Who is the mysterious person and how did they know to leave before the attack?
The book is a breezy read, and can be finished in a couple of days without too much trouble. It also flushes out all the races that you will encounter in the game. It gives you an idea of where the technology that humans have found to make it possible to travel beyond our own space. But the biggest thing was that I finally know what a Mass Effect is and how it relates to the title of the game. I never understood what that was suppose to mean in regards to the overall story.
I would definitely check out the book. For about $7.00 it will give you a lot of backstory on the universe and it leads into the main story that will drive the game. I have only given a brief breakdown of the book, just to preserve spoilers from the general public, but it is well worth reading.
