Mario Kart Wii to boast 12-player online racing… unconfirmed?

“Nintendo’s Japanese press conference may have solved that mystery this week, as CEO Satoru Iwata said that the online competition in Mario Kart Wii will be bigger than the DS incarnation by allowing 12 online racers to compete, and hinting at a more streamlined matchmaking process — no friend codes, please!”

Well, keep your panties on. I’m sure friend codes aren’t going anywhere, but if you want to do matchmaking, I wouldn’t expect that function to use friend codes, since the DS version doesn’t. On the other hand, you may remove said panties. 12 players online? That is awesome. Let’s hope they can each be playing on a separate Wii… but aren’t required to, am I right?

The problem with this is the linked page will not play, and nobody else’s reports of this event are claiming anything about Mario Kart along these lines. Hmm?

    Actually, DS Mario Kart does use friend codes for targeted matchmaking. You can do without them, but only to play completely random opponents.

    If it’s coming from your pool of “friends” then I don’t know that I would consider it “matchmaking”. The other modes that are not 100% random, like “rivals” and such, don’t require friend codes. The only limitation is, if you want to play with specific individuals, you need to trade friend codes with them. I don’t think it’s a significant limitation in Mario Kart DS and I don’t expect them to change that in Mario Kart Wii. He might just mean it will connect to opponents faster…
