Kane and Lynch Provides Innovative Multiplayer

Like many of you I was dismayed by the announcement that Kane and Lynch would not have online co-op. That seemed like a major no-brainer to me, and I would much rather see the game delayed to include the feature, as opposed to cutting it to make sure the game is released “on time”. But perhaps they are looking at games like Crackdown and Gears of War and seeing co-op features that are now barely used.

Despite the loss of online co-op, according to Xbox360Fanboy.com, Kane and Lynch will be including an innovative bank heist multiplayer that Io Interactive is calling “Fragile Alliance”. X3F says:

Described by the developers at IO Interactive as such a good idea that they were surprised no one thought of it before, the multiplayer mode has players performing a bank heist. Titled Fragile Alliance, the mode has players attempt to rob a bank within a certain time limit while avoiding police fire. The twist is that players can turn on each other in order to get more loot. However, killing teammates immediately flags you as a traitor, so one has to pick the right moment to betray. Make it back to the getaway car with extra cash and you can purchase better weapons the following round. As a bonus, betrayed teammates are resurrected as police officers so they can exact their bittersweet revenge. In short, it sounds like a great idea. Here’s hoping it makes us forget about online co-op.

Not only is this a great sounding multiplayer gametype, but it also fits well with the dregs of the Xbox Live community. You know, the people that enjoy team-killing and every other griefer tactic. Here’s a multiplayer mode JUST FOR THEM! Grief away, scumbags! When I spawn back in as a cop, I’ll pepper spray you right in the eye!

Huh? Online co-op is one of the most popular features of the current generation of games. Both Crackdown and Gears are much more fun in co-op, aren’t they?

I realize they’re not quite the same thing, but this sounds like the “hardcore” version of the fragile alliance multiplayer of Four Swords Adventures and Crystal Chronicles.

Paul – Co-op was big with Crackdown and Gears at launch, but it is hardly used at this point. I would rather them spend more time on multiplayer, or even building more into the single player experience.

Geroge – While this sounds cool, I could see it blow up into massive shooting fests and betrayals right off the bat. Actually, it sounds like half the Counterstrike games I have played in (not that many, but they turned into team kill fests on several occasions).
