Guitar Hero 3 Impressions from E for All

    By Joe Haygood | October 23, 2007

One of the first stops at E for All after Rock Band was the Target Pavilion, where they had about 15 arcade booths, all holding multiplayer matches of Guitar Hero 3 on the 360. We also got to try out the Wii version of the game later in the day, to compare the two versions.

Setting up at one of the kiosks, it was the first time I actually had a chance to try out the game on the 360. They had a line up of several songs and I decided to play the best out of the bunch, The Scorpions, “Rock You Like A Hurricane”. It is a solid song with a lot of great guitar riffs. I was really surprised that the song has not been used in a Guitar Hero game up to this point, but I guess the success of the game has made it a lot easier to get artists to release their music.

The interface while feeling somewhat new, it never feels cluttered. One of the nice features that I really liked was the note counter that sits next to the bonus multiplier. I now know at a glance where I stand in regards to a note streak. The game also splashes things across the main screen when you are playing, like hitting certain note streaks or when you have star power ready.

The game does feel a bit easier at times. It seemed like you got one more instant of time to hit the notes. I could be wrong, but I feel that it seemed easier to hit notes. Normally I am at my best in Medium (sorry GH fans, I just don’t have the skill required to move all over the fret board.), but I was able to complete a few songs on Hard without too much difficulty. This could be upsetting for those looking for a serious challenge from this game.

We have heard of downloadable content coming out to the marketplace right on the heels of the game’s release, but there is no firm idea of what to expect from the content in regards to artists or price.

Guitar Hero 3 on the Wii, played pretty much the same as its counterpart on the 360. I did like the feel of the guitar for the Wii, almost as much as the new 360 guitar. The game seemed to be a bit more difficult on the Wii, but there is not firm support for this notion. I just seemed to have an easier time with the 360 version. The game did look really good on the Wii, but I am not sure about multiplayer modes for Nintendo console owners. I can’t say that I have read anything about it.

The game does come to all the consoles along with the PC and Mac versions on October 28th.

    1. Is there a way to disable battle-mode’s new mechanics? They don’t seem to be much fun…
