Elite IV Not Even On The Scanner

Didn’t think I saw it, did you? I did see it. David Braben, the creator of one of my favorite retro games was having a little dog-and-pony show about his company’s upcoming game The Outsider when he mentioned that Elite IV was still in the works.

Not only is it still in development, but it’s supposedly coming to the current generation of consoles. Consoles? The Elite games were at their best on full-fledged (in their day, anyway) computers, but they could work on consoles. Our own Stephen may roll his eyes at this kind of discussion of this old goat of a game, but I think the faithful, however many are left, should really stop holding your breath for Elite IV. It’s been six years since it was announced. That’s getting into Duke Nukem Forever vaporware territory.

What are the chances that this game will get made and, even more importantly, that it will be any good? Dig down deep, hand over ten bucks to your local Target, and pick up X2: The Threat. The menu system and controls are tough, the plot is laughably bad, but the depth of the surrounding universe is truly impressive and addictive. Why do I recommend X2: The Threat, or even its newer sequel X3: Reunion? Because I need help. I’m hopelessly addicted to the game and as you know, misery loves company.
