EA Hates Console Wars

EA is apparently getting tired of making umpteen versions of the same game for every single platform. They want consumers to have only one platform to choose from, according to a BBC report.

Allow me to quote from the article:

Rival gaming systems should make way for a single open platform, a senior executive at Electronic Arts has said.

Gerhard Florin said incompatible consoles made life harder for developers and consumers.

“We want an open, standard platform which is much easier than having five which are not compatible,” said EA’s head of international publishing.

O RLY?

It must infuriate EA that they have to hire all these developers to port games to 14 different platforms. Gosh, if we got rid of competing platforms, that would mean they would only need ONE team to work on ONE crappy version of Madden. They could save awesome amounts of money.

Only thing is, we have an open, standard platform. It’s called the PC. Almost everyone has one, and a game designed for my PC will undoubtedly work for your PC, assuming you have opted to purchase your recent state-sanctioned mandatory hardware upgrades. Unfortunately for EA, the market has kind of decided that open, standard platforms suck for gaming. If it were otherwise, we might be playing Team Fortress 2 on Linux instead of on Windows, Xbox 360, and PS3.

But keep dreaming EA, maybe you can cash out your Bioware/Pandemic holdings and use the money to buy your own communist country where there is only one gaming console platform. You can call it “The People’s Box” and run all the Madden clones you want.
