Activision finally graced PC gamers around the world with a demo for the upcoming Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and let me say that if the demo is as good as the rest of the game, we may have a serious contender for Game of the Year on our hands. Yes, the demo is that good.

Infinity Ward has made a wise decision to move the action from World War II and into the present or near future. It is a change that gives this game the step up in realism and the feel of an actual battlefield. While the first three Call of Duty games were good in their own right, they always felt a little sterilized when it came to the war as a whole. It always seemed controlled and clean. Not so in Modern Warfare.

The Call of Duty 4 demo starts you in the middle of chaos. RPGs whistle past your head with their con trails following behind them. Tracer fire is everywhere, smoke fills the air, it is just complete chaos. It has the feeling of what a battlefield can look like once the boots hit the ground. Insurgents pop out of every building, knowing the terrain far better than you and your squadmates. It was about this point that a smile crossed my face to see that someone finally gives the realization that war is not controlled or methodical. It is controlled chaos. You have tactics and plans, but the exactness of how you get there is up to interpretation.

As you can tell from my two screenshots, the graphics look amazing. I had a third shot, but it ended up with me being dead by the time I got the screen capture, so that one went in the recycle bin. But as you can see, it looks sharp. The details are there from lighting to the arabic scrawl on the walls. It paints a picture of how ugly war can be. Audio was great too, with your commander constantly barking in your ear to get things done. The weapons blasts are great. Especially when you launch a Javelin shoulder missle, it is just epic.

Everything is done top notch, but it is the feel of the game that just makes it so good. It looks fantastic and sounds great, but the feel of an honest to goodness battlefield is what takes the cake. I honestly feel that this game could be the first big contender to Bioshock for game of the year. It is that good.

I have to say that this Demo really blew me away. I’ve been a fan of the CoD series since the beginning. This really steps up the experience up for the player. There was a ceiling for excitement in the original CoD WWII games, but this begins to define the modern warfare gaming experience.

The JAVELIN MISSILE LAUNCHER? Come on, that was just downright excellent. Such a satisfying weapon.

I can’t wait for this to come out.

I’m sorry to say it but I didn’t find the Demo all that great. Don’t get me wrong I think the graphics, the lighting the texture and the sound were amazing, it’s just that I was disapointed of the gameplay. In my opion i think it was linear, the developers want the player to do specific things to advance in the game(Example: at the end of the Demo you have to call for air support to destroy the building where the insurgents are in) well what if I want to destroy it with an RPG or a bomb of some sort, it’s just not there and I think a next-gen game should give the players more than one option and also a complete destructive environment :)

I’d have to agree with “killa80″. I loved the demo. The gameplay was fun and chaotic at the same time. Graphics were unlike any I’ve seen. The nightvision was amazing! But I would’ve also liked to have a little more freedom to rome around and have other options to destroy things.
I’ll probably end up buying the game regardless though cause I’m excited to see other levels.
