Aeropodcast No11: Wake Up with the King edition.
Mentions of not only the Burger King but the northern nationality of our special guest, James King from The Wiire, abound in the latest issue of the Aeropodcast.
James, being from Canada, takes every opportunity to not only mock our somewhat less impressive currency’s coloring as well as its lack of cleanliness, but to extol the virtues of hockey and occasionally even say, “eh.” Well, no, I made up that very last part, but I’m still bitter about that bird pecking out the president’s eyes. After recovering from the shock that George played something other than Halo 3 this week, and everyone makes everyone else feel silly for not buying Orange Box and Phantom Hourglass, we jump right into our surprisingly varied takes on the super gory Soldier of Fortune: Payback, which is expected before too long on 360, PS3, and PC. We got a message from Tony Rodriguez at Endangered Gamer, and he wants our take on this prime example of “gore porn.” Manhunt 2 is mentioned within and without the context of rating systems, and James makes a movie recommendation that we’re looking forward to following.
We touch briefly on Microsoft’s brilliant Achievements concept, and how addictive they can be. On the subject of addictive, we also spend some time talking about Puzzle Quest and its value on DS vs XBLA. We also talk about George’s nemesis, EA, and their acquisition of Bioware and Pandemic. James and I agree that EA is one of the few companies paying attention to what they’re doing on the Wii, and we all wax nostalgic of the old days when EA meant Archon and Mail Order Monsters.
Then we move on to Super Smash Bros Brawl and how third party character appearances, such as the newly announced Sonic the Hedgehog, contributed to the game’s delay. We all seem to agree that a late game is way better than a rushed, unbalanced one. Master Chief and Mega Man are mentioned as playable characters we’d like to see.
Finally, we close with Jane Jensen’s Gray Matter and whether or not the game buying world still wants this kind of game, or whether it’s best left to integration with other more popular genres. Sam and Max and the wave of adventure games on DS are mentioned, James suggests it’s only a matter of time before we see the next Myst, and we’re all looking forward to seeing what happens with Gray Matter.
