UK prisons ban high-tech consoles

Submitted by on September 11, 2007 – 1:40 am4 Comments

prisonbars.jpg You may have heard before about prisoners playing games on a PS2 or Xbox. It gives prisoners something to do and thus, apparently, reduces the risk of violence among inmates. However, the UK has banned the PS3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo DS from prisons, because the equipment could theoretically send or receive radio signals. They worry that prisoners could use the devices to organize terrorist attacks. The article also mentions that prison officials are also concerned about other game consoles, and that a ban of all consoles could be enacted.

The only console they oughta be giving those British inmates is a touch of the ol Clockwork Orange.

I can just see an inmate sending out a call to arms over Pictochat. To a visitor standing up to 30 feet away.

I expected from the headline to hear that they were worried about them using the PS3 or the 360′s power brick as weapons, which is preposterous. Who can lift those things?

Clockwork Orange was the electronic gizmo that the British jail system hooked up to Alex-the AntiSocial to put him on the straight and narrow.

Kinda loses something when trying to explain it. Or i really shoulda waited to later in the day to comment on the story. Im sorry. Ya know it’s been a really rough month. First I walked in on my mom doing it with the plumber. Then my damn son played that damn Halo 3 test game and got my ass banned from XBoxLive til 9999. Then someone stole my stack of ‘Screw’ magazines. And what with my spastic colon I havent dared to leave the house for more than 20 minutes at a time.

Again, I apologize and hope to get back on my game here in a few days or so.
