TGS07: PSP, PSP to PS3, and PlayStation Store Improvements Coming

PSP-1000

The PSP was another major focus of Sony at the Tokyo Game Show, and they had a few announcements related to it, the PlayStation Store, and its big brother the PS3.

Remote Play will be upgraded to allow you to turn on and off your PS3 from its standby mode. This was mentioned in an earlier developer interview in July. This should let us save power, keeping our PS3′s available for Remote Play while switched off.

The PlayStation Store will be coming to the PC, letting users purchase and download PSP content using a PC instead of just a PS3. Right now this is available in Japan, with no announcement yet for other regions. This is a risky move for Sony, opening up their Store to hackers, but people without a PS3 have been clamoring for this for quite a while. Frankly unless they put a lot more PS1 games on the Store outside of Japan I don’t really see a need for this elsewhere.

Other things promised for the PSP include using it as an additional monitor for the system and a controller for playing games on the PS3. Voice recognition was also mentioned. How the controller functions differ from classical Remote Play is something that’s not clear, so I’m writing all of this off as a very long term addition to the platform.

Details are from Gamespot’s coverage, PSPFanboy’s coverage of the PSP updates and the Store updates.
