Square’s Wada Feels Sony Has Some Marketing Issues

Square Enix president, Yoichi Wada, feels that the Sony marketing machine is a bit confused when it comes to the Playstation 3. Wada had the following statement about the Sony and the PS3:

“Sony first unveiled the PS3 as a mighty home electronics product. Then, after some badgering from game companies, it shifted the position of the console closer to a game machine.”

While I would not take this as a sign of Square Enix, I would say that it is interesting that as of late, they have started to spread the love to all three platforms, with Nintendo getting the Dragon Quest series and Final Fantasy games on the DS, while even the 360 got a little taste of love from Square with Project Sylpheed.

One has to wonder though if the comments from Wada will move Sony in any way, in regards to another price-cut or a declaration of what side of the fence they are on. I know in the past Sony has pushed this as a home entertainment center, complete with a soon to be launched TV service in Europe. But now they are pushing the game console angle.

Again, I don’t think that this will move Square to put Final Fantasy XIII on the 360 or Wii, but it has to make Sony a bit nervous with statements like this from its staunchest supporter.

    Very interesting indeed

I doubt very much that Sony will even give Wada’s comments a second thought, assuming they were heard at all.

But at the same time, the 360 seems to be evolving more into an entertainment center. Hopefully the Media Extender deal will find its way to the 360 in the fall so we can get our dvix on.

I don’t think there will be another price cut until 2008. The PS3 price was cut by $100 right before E3.

“I don’t think there will be another price cut until 2008. The PS3 price was cut by $100 right before E3.” it wasn’t a price cut it was a clearance sale till they run out of the 60 gig models

    Yay, contest.

Meh, I couldn’t be less interested in the PS3. Of course, I said the same thing about the Xbox and I wound up getting one of those (once they dropped to under $200).

If the 60gig model originally cost $600 and now costs $500, it’s a smeggin’ price cut. To argue otherwise is just semantics. Yes, there’s a new $600 model… but on a strict consumer level, what once cost $600 now costs $500. Jesus, that was easy.

    And on yeah, contest entry!

Personally, I think the Next-Gen consoles all started too early. From what we’ve seen so far, no company had any idea what was going to happen when they launched their devices and they all decided to scramble afterwards to push them off the shelves.

Sony switched from console to family-room device when they had their drought of games. Now games are coming back and they (will) switch to console again to push the sales.

The biggest problem that Sony has faced with this generation is that they once again brought a new architecture to the table and made it hard for early adopters. Once more developers have their head wrapped around it, the PS3 will see its waterfall of games again. That is, if everyone hasn’t pushed it to the wayside yet.
