Sony’s TGS2007 Keynote: Dual Shock 3 Announced; Home Delayed [Update]

Submitted by on September 20, 2007 – 12:50 am5 Comments

PS LogoSony’s Tokyo Game Show 2007 keynote speech, delivered by Kaz Hirai, had a couple of announcements to make. First, the Dual Shock 3 is coming, bringing rumble to the SIXAXIS design in Spring 2008. A total of 11 games in development include this feature, two of which are Devil May Cry 4 and Metal Gear Solid 4. Other games can get rumble support patched in.

The Dual Shock 3 was apparently seen ahead of time attached to a demo of Burnout Paradise, so was accidentally leaked by EA ahead of Sony’s keynote, noted by Joystiq. One might assume that Burnout Paradise is a third game featuring rumble of the 11.

Also headed for “Spring 2008″ is PlayStation Home, originally slated for an October launch and since then hinted at staying in beta for the rest of this year. See our podcast last week for my feelings on what this could mean for Sony. This, along with the Dual Shock 3, was seen in Gamespot’s coverage.

Lastly, Sony will be acquiring the developer of Motorstorm as well as the developer of the Pursuit Force series of games, reports EvilAvatar.

Update #1: Sony has published two lists associated with the Dual Shock 3: one of games that already support the Dual Shock 3 and the other of games that will get support patched in. See the lists after the jump.

Update #2: Sony says the Dual Shock 3 won’t be packaged with the PS3, only sold separately, says Gamespot. I smell royalty issues.

So, why was PlayStation Home delayed? Kaz Hirai says only, “Please be patient.”

Back when the PS3 launched I wrote a little article called Sony’s Promises, Promises. Looks like I might need to update it a bit.

Update #2: The Dual Shock 3 won’t be packed in with the PS3 in the spring, only sold separately. This definitely sounds like a royalty issue to me that Immersion got to stick to Sony hard when Sony came crawling back to them for an agreement. I’d guess the only thing keeping Sony from packing it in with the PS3 would be if Sony had to pay a percentage of the console back to Immersion instead of a percentage of just the controller.

Update #1: Sony has published two lists associated with the Dual Shock 3: one of games that already support the Dual Shock 3 and the other of games that will get support patched in.

The list of games isn’t a tiny one. I’ve sorted it alphabetically just for fun, and there are titles on there that are alien to me, suggesting that they’re JP-only titles.

“A delayed game can become good, but a bad game will always be bad” might apply, but is Home really a game?

Eh. For what Home will be, I’d rather it be delayed than rushed out the door.

  • Joe (Aeropause)

Was I the only one who noticed that it was about 25 minutes into the keynote before the PS3 was mentioned in earnest.

The delay of Home is a big deal, because that seems to be the basket that Sony is putting all their eggs into. With it being delayed for six months (estimated), one has to think what the strategy will be now?

Sony just seems to be like a deer in the headlights at this point, with the confusion over strategy. One minute they are an entertainment center, then Kaz says they are a gaming platform, now they talked about the entertainment hub again. Kaz, what is it going to be?

So sony will never have the dualshock with the ps3?

Christ. i really don’t want to pay 70 bucks extra for a controller that should hav ebeen packed in from day one.

  • http://www.farbot.com Paul (Aeropause)

Van Faulk: Never say never, just not at launch. I’m sure the price will be the same as the current SIXAXIS (40 bucks when on sale, not 70), and if you want a second controller that’s all you will be able to buy (and who would want the old SIXAXIS anyway?

So this is really a replacement for the retail SIXAXIS.

This is great news but GTA4 and Ninja Gaiden Sigma are not on the list :( . I hope those games will support Dual Shock 3. I would like to know how long the DS3 can be used before it needs to be charged up like the sixaxis. My sixaxis does not need to charged more than once a month.
