Saints Row 2 to Give the Ultimate Sandbox Experience

The game Saint’s Row was a huge hit that added the one thing that was missing from the Grand Theft Auto formula – multiplayer. It had multiplayer and it made the game a lot of fun to play with a bunch of friends. Now, Volition and THQ have started working on the next version of the game, they are focusing more on the sandbox elements this time around, giving the user more creativity.

“Saints Row set the bar for next-gen open-world development, earning praise for its unmatched customization, controls, and the genre’s first-ever online multiplayer,” said Scott Guthrie, executive vice president of sales and marketing, THQ. “The team at Volition, Inc. is leveraging invaluable experience gained on Saints Row to build Saints Row 2 into a game that sets the standard for combat, player freedom, customization, vehicle game-play, team-based co-op and the most compelling online open world experience to date.”

They are also going for a darker tone in the main storyline this time around. Your character is coming back after being left for dead, and he is looking for a little payback this time around. Volition says that you will see some of the humor from the first game make a return, but it will just have a more sinister feel to the game overall.

Having the Sandbox mode in the game will allow for some crazy development in the game. I can only imaging what some people will dream up for the game if this all pans out. The game is still on track for an early release in 2008.

  • I was bummed when Saints Row for PS3 was canned and with luck the PS3 version of SR2 will come out on time.

I'm really looking forward to a next-gen sandbox GTA-style game. It just might be a little silly if The Simpsons Game turns out to be the first one on the PS3.
