And I bet the 40 came about because Sony has a stockpile of them left from a Vaio laptop factory and decided to use them at no purchase cost for the video game division. That said, 40gb drives are basically retail nonstarters these days. Nobody I know would buy an aftermarket hard drive for a laptop that was just 40gb, so maybe they're getting a killer deal on them for the new model? It's all guesswork, but I agree that it certainly does seem strange that the HDD right now looks like the only difference. It looks like sony wants to have 2 types of PS3's on the market at all times.
