Rumor: PS3 Price Cut; New 40GB Model; PS2 Price Cut for Holidays

A so-far-reliable source over at ArsTechnica has passed along what Sony’s pricing and product strategy might look like for this holiday season for both the PS3 and PS2. The rumored changes include not just the 80GB version of the system falling to $499 — no surprise there — but a brand new 40GB version of the system to retail at $399. The same source notes that the PS2 could get a price drop to $99. The PS3 models may not debut with nothing to play or watch on them, either. A Blu-ray copy of Spider-Man 3 might be bundled with both PS3 models.
If the 40GB rumor is true, this would be the fourth version of the PS3 out in the wild. As for the PS2 price cut, even at that price I’m sure it’s making money for the company running in last place in the console race. The biggest question for me is what will differ between the 40GB and 80GB PS3’s. I’m hoping it’s only hard drive space, but stripping out the flash memory reader wouldn’t be a grievous loss considering the machine can read and write to USB data drives extremely easily.
