Random Game of the Week – Issue 2: Perfect Dark

We finally have the second issue of our random game of the week. As always, we get our random game from the website Moby Games, the best source on the web for finding out any information about a game that has been released on virtually any console or PC. Normally the issues will be on Sunday, but some complications this week delayed the issue (damn sinuses). This week’s game as you can tell by the picture is Perfect Dark on the Game Boy Color.

Perfect Dark took the game that had been played on the Nintendo 64 and let you get your Joanna fix on the go. Using action that was similar to Goldeneye, the Perfect Dark series focused more on stealth. Guns were normally a last resort. Joanna works for the Carrington Institute which tracks terrorist threats around the world. This time they have set their sites on dataDyne, which has been coming out with new technologies at such a fast pace that it worries the Carrington Institute that something might be going on, so they send in Joanna Dark to investigate. The game came out in August of 2000 and was made by Rare, Ltd. Below is a screenshot:

GBA ports of decent console games always scared me. I was very scared of the ports of the Splinter Cells, and I think this terrifies me just a little more.

Wait… what does that screenshot have to do w/ the actual gameplay? It’s from the selection/title screen.

This reminds of when the game companies used to do their “oh and on the GameBoy, too!” ports. Take a 3D game, make it 2D and say its the same. But wait! it’s actually missing all of the elements from the 3D brethren and only bares the same name and characters.

Wow, that really is a random game. I can’t imagine that PD translated to the GB very well.

The PD series will have a soft spot in my heart, as that 64 game helped me through some hard times in college (or caused them, not quite sure).

But Leon’s youtube vid is the reason i haven’t picked up PDZ. I really enjoyed the 64 version and would hate to have that memory tainted by a crappy sequel.
