Logitech Cordless MediaBoard Pro Bluetooth Keyboard and Headset Announced

Logitech has announced the replacement for their PS3 Cordless Mediaboard that I bought not three months ago, and I’m a little miffed. The version I have is great, don’t get me wrong. The integrated trackpad makes it worth using and holding on to, and the really long battery life with an actual on-off switch (no timing out thank you very much) have made it a keeper. But this new one includes new action buttons (square, x, circle, and triangle) along with a Menu button (which might be the same as the PlayStation button) and it’s bluetooth. The current Mediaboard has a very small USB dongle that fits nicely on the front of the PS3 and gives it excellent range. Plus, the new keyboard is black, a plus when the original one is silver, and when it shows up in October it will cost the same as the silver one did, $79.99.

It runs on two AA batteries, which is the same as the previous RF keyboard, but the older keyboard may have an edge in the price department — it’s currently listed at $59.99 at retail. Not exactly a fire sale price, but it may work with other consoles that don’t have bluetooth like the 360 or the Wii. Not sure if the 360 likes mice, though, so the touch pad might not be used then.

They’ve announced it alongside a new bluetooth headset, which is nice and all, but not as nice as the keyboard.

This just means it’s time for me to test out the RF mediaboard with another computer to justify buying the new one. :-)

Logitech has officially and publicly announced that their MediaBoard Pro Bluetooth Keyboard for PS which released just last week is not supported on Linux for PS3.

Don’t buy it. It sucks, I’m shipping mine back!
They broke Linx compatability by putting “(TM)” in the hardware identifier.
The brackets are control characters to the bluetooth software.

I am the BlueJoe in the quoted thread below.

Below is a copy of a thread on the Logitech Tech support forum:

Forgive me for repeating this from yesterdays post under gaming consoles, but I did not get a response.
I thought this forum might be more appropriate.

Logitech Bluetooth Mediaboard Pro(TM) does not work with Linux on PS3.
I tested on Yellowdog 4.2 and Ubuntu 7.10

I keep getting connection errors when trying to connect. It complains about the “(” being a syntax error.

I assumed the complaining was about the (TM) included in the name which is also used as an identifier.
I remove the (TM) when using the bluetooth tools manually, and the error goes away, but now the identifier is incorrect.
So now the failure is justified, I am using the wrong identifier.

Is there a way to reprogram the keyboard with a new name without the (TM)?
    Is there some alternative solution?
Or should I just ship it back as unusable?

You may find others who have located workarounds, but the keyboard isn’t supported on Linux. There’s no way to tell if it will work or not.

Are you sure you really want to make a statement like that in public?

Not supported on Linux with PS3 for a PS3 keyboard is like saying:

“You are stupid for buying our product! We only support it for functionality which is woefully inadequate for.”

It is virtually useless for web browsing because it lacks any ability to resize or zoom which is the most critical aspect of the PS3 Controller when web browsing on a large screen TV.”

    OK I ship it back!

I bought a 30 dollar USB wifi keyboard and mouse today, it is so much better than the Logitech Media Board Pro Bluetooth (TM). Which dosen’t even have a mouse or full size keyboard for 70 dollars. And no its not Logitech(TM)!
