Is the PSP Market Shrinking?

Koji Igarashi of Konami has been quoted as saying that “the PSP’s market has been shrinking as of late” as a reason why he is concerned about making more Castlevania games for the platform after Dracula X Chronicles is released. Sales of the game will, of course, change his tune if they’re strong enough. Frankly, this isn’t rocket science. A developer or publisher won’t green-light more games on a given platform if they don’t sell well enough.
And of course if you’re standing on the ever-rising mountain of sold DS and Wii systems everything else will look like it’s shrinking down to ant-size far, far below you. But all kidding aside, the PSP’s sales numbers in the US have never been better. Since its price cut it’s picked up some steam. If anyone thinks anything can catch the runaway train known as the DS, however, they’re just not able to do the old-style math.
Incidentally, he says his next project will be on the DS, and the 1Up interview is very interesting, giving lots of his own history with with the storied Castlevania franchise.
