Google Earth’s Hidden Flight Simulator

Submitted by on September 2, 2007 – 4:08 pm2 Comments

Slashdot reports that the latest version of Google Earth has a new, hidden flight simulator mode inside. You get a choice of just two aircraft and can fly thorugh their signature Google maps and satellite imagery. Once you unlock it using a specific key combination described in the article, it becomes available on the tools menu.

What do you think? Will Google expand this mode or is it just there so they can thumb their nose at Microsoft, who long ago obliterated all competition in the flight simulator marketplace?

Probably a little wink wink at Microsoft because of the flight simulator that use to be in Excel. It use to be that with a certain function and keystrokes, you could get a flight sim in Excel 97/2000 and I think even in XP. It was rather basic, but it was there.

I managed to get it started, but while reading the controls on the Google Earth website, it occurred to me that perhaps I ought to see if I can get my gamepad running on my iMac before trying to play something this complicated.
