Xbox 360 Perfect Storm of Marketing: $50 price drop

Submitted by on August 7, 2007 – 11:28 am9 Comments

xboxpricecuts1.jpgWhat we reported earlier has been confirmed in a press release we received today. The Premium Xbox 360 is dropping $50 to $349. The Elite is dropping $30 to $449 and the Core falls to $279 for a $20 savings.

Hey, at least this is a REAL price drop.

And naturally, the press release also makes sure to mention “Madden NFL Football” as “one of the most important mass-appeal franchises in video games.” Sure, I guess it can be the most important, if you feel that EA buying out the NFL was important. Now, why are they mentioning Madden with a price drop? Yeah, I dunno, but using marketing logic, I’m sure it makes perfect sense. They’re holistically combining paradigms to maximize sell-through and attach rate. Or something.

The use of Madden in marketing is simple economics. Madden will be one of the top three sellers on the platform this year. You figure Halo 3 will be top dog.

I still don’t understand how the ps3 wasn’t a price drop, the 60gb was 599, now its 499, seems like a price drop to me. and when the 60gb’s are sold out, the 80gb will drop to 499. its a price drop, no matter how you look at it.

The 360 dropped $100 here in Canada :-)

Not that it matters to me – I already own one.

Bill – Because if you announce a price drop on a console and then discontinue the item, you end up with no net price cut. As for a price cut on the 80GB PS3, no one at Sony has said anything about a price drop for the 80GB PS3 yet. If you have some inside info, you should send it to us at tips@aeropause.com. Just make sure to include the source of your info.

Of course you don’t understand you lack common sense. =D

Bill, there has been no announcement of a price drop for the 80GB model, so once the 60GB goes out of stock consumers will be faced with only the $599 80GB model.

As for a “perfect storm”, does this mean only one Xbox out of all of those mentioned would survive? I mean, nobody has confirmed that non-red-ring-vulnerable 360′s are on the market yet.

Sifer, don’t be an ass, even if he was an ass to you.

  • Sifer2400

well i normally don’t care but he used my name and made a fake comment on the core system article i think were even now thought =D

  • Bill

I didn’t make comments about anyone or anything, but anyway.

I understand that Sony hasn’t officially announced that the 80gig will be $499, it wouldn’t be a smart business move on their part, but I am willing to bet anything that once the 60gbs are sold out Sony will start selling the 80gb without a game for $499.

Regardless, you can still buy a 60gb for $499, which is $100 cheaper then its original price of $599
