Wii Remotes get the “faceplate” treatment.
While the mention of a tri-wing screwdriver might turn the squeamish, I’ve noticed people selling what are being called “faceplates” for the Nintendo Wii Remote. Now keep in mind that the Wii Remote’s outer shell is really just two pieces of plastic, one for the top, one for the bottom. So, what this amounts to is a replacement upper shell for the Wii Remote in a different color. The ones I’m seeing on eBay tend to ship with a tri-wing screwdriver – that’s what we call the special security screws that Nintendo uses in their small devices like handhelds and controllers in an attempt to keep idiots like me from cracking them open – and little replacement buttons as well, all in an assortment of colors. The quality is hard to judge and there’s no brand apparent on them, but further research reveals that the product is made by Shenzhen GC Electronics Co., Ltd in China. There is some clear appeal to having a way to customize the appearance, so it would be nice if we could see whether this product has the same quality as the stock Remote shell does.
These are not to be confused with Intec’s own “faceplates,” which are actually more of a translucent resin skin than anything else, though they do look nice… still, I prefer to fly in leather. If I were to pick up a skin, I’d probably go with DecalGirl. I’m always anxious about buying from someone I’ve never heard from, especially when the shipping is pretty exhorbitant.
