Uwe Boll: The Interview

Well, we were lucky enough to score an interview with the infamous Uwe Boll, director of such films as Bloodrayne, Alone in the Dark and House of the Dead. His newest film, Postal, based on the game of the same name, has garnered widespread criticism, and he has two more projects coming out soon, Far Cry and Dungeon Siege. My goal with the interview was not to be confrontational, but to try to gather some info on his films and gauge why he thinks we are so angry with him. So sit back and enjoy the read after the jump.

Be forewarned – There is some use of foul language. If you are younger, you might have to blurb past a couple of words.

Joe Haygood: First off, Mr. Boll, I would like to thank you for taking the time out of your schedule to give us an interview.

JH: First off, I am sure that you know that you have heard some of the criticisms of gamers in regards to the treatment they get in your films. I know from personal experience that I am a Bloodrayne fan and was a bit disappointed more at the timeframe of the movie than the substance that was in it. Why do you think they feel this way? Do you feel that it is personal or something else to it?

Uwe Boll: Now we have BLOODRAYNE 2 coming out – it is a Vampire Western. We move 100 years forward with every part and BLOODRAYNE 3 will be in the Second World War.

JH: Looking back at the reception that films like the aforementioned Bloodrayne, Alone in the Dark and House of the Dead, would you change the way that you handled these properties? Maybe got more involved with the developers of the games, or having some gamers on staff to help with the translation from game to film.

UB: Actually this was not my fault. ATARI and SEGA sold the rights and never contacted me again. It was stupid – because I tried to get feedback from the game creators etc.! Running with Scissors on POSTAL and Gas Power Games with DUNGEON SIEGE are way better and helped with developing the scripts — they love the movies I have made out of their games.

JH: You chose to challenge critics to boxing matches because of how they felt about your films. Why did you feel this was a good thing to do? Did you have any fear of losing to some of these critics? Do you feel it was the best way to attack the criticism you have received in the press?

UB: I have nothing against a solid BAD REVIEW. But I got bashed way over the top – it went far away from my movies and was only personal . So I took it personal. I was not scared to fight and I trained for the fights.

JH: Currently you are finishing up Postal, a movie based loosely on the game of the same name. It has received some serious attention from people because of the satire that you use towards the events of September 11th, 2001. Why did you choose to take on a rather sensitive subject of this nature?

UB: POSTAL is my best and most important movie by far. It’s a reflection about my career – and the disaster we have around us — with global warming, senseless wars, and religious fanatics. I wrote POSTAL in the mood: NOW I GIVE A FUCK ABOUT EVERYTHING. I write what I think its funny and important.

JH: What is the deal between you and the New York Post? I have to admit that I find it funny that a paper that has made its living off of trashing other people, would get offended at someone attacking it. Can you give us a bit of a breakdown as to what your feud entails, and if there are any talks between you and the paper in regards to settling the allegations?

UB: The POST is blackmailing my distributors, my webprovider (who actually shut down the website and I tried to get it up again) and the MPAA. Its an act of censorship of a newspaper against free speech and it shows in what world we are living – especially after September11.

JH: Can you give us a breakdown of Postal the Movie and how close it relates to the subject matter from the games? The game is not afraid to offend anyone and is honest about what it is trying to portray. Did you use this as a stepping stone in the development of Postal?

UB: Absolutly. I think we are very close to the game: we have the Dude and his fat wife bitch living in the trailer park. We have Bush and Bin Laden as good buddies and every comes together in PARADISE in one day — maybe the last day of earth. And we use cats as silencers.

JH: I remember you getting some sizable talent for Dungeon Siege the movie, but I have not heard or seen much of it since the trailer that was released a while back. How are things progressing on that movie? Does it follow the game in any way or just use it as a foundation for something more original?

UB: The release is in europe November 29 and in USA in january 08. A wide theatrical release.

JH: You also have the Far Cry property in your stable of films to develop. When will production start on this film, and have you got anyone in mind to play the lead character?

UB: We are done shooting with Til Schweiger as Jack Carver.

JH: Lastly, I am curious what has made you focus on developing game properties? What makes you pick a game and try to get the rights to it? If you could pick any game that you do not have the rights to at this time, what would it be and why?

UB: METAL GEAR SOLID, I loved HITMAN …but now they made the movie without me. I loved THE SUFFERING.

Great interview, Joe! Thanks for doing it.

Good job getting the interview, I enjoyed it very much. But I noticed Boll went directly out of his way to not answer some of you questions, strange?

Stay away from MGS. He is not worthy and I’m glad Kojima is not going to let him.
