USB Keyboard support now on Wii, but limited.

As excited as I am about this, I feel someone’s heel on my neck. A few weeks ago I turned down a brand new Apple Keyboard for FIVE DOLLARS (MSRP $50) and I could be using it with my Wii right now. Have you seen that keyboard? It’s totally slick. In my defense, I was very cheap that day. That was the day I turned down a $10 N64… and a 50¬¢ Dreamcast. What the hell is wrong with me, that’s no defense, it’s a flat indictment.

That’s OK though, I can use many recent USB keyboards with the Wii. Like this one, the Microsoft Natural Keyboard, which I use on my PC right now, I guess.Just doesn’t seem right, seeing as how it’s so much larger than the Wii, and totally the wrong aesthetic. *sigh*. I guess I’ll just have to lament. OK, I’m lamenting, that was that sound you heard.

What am I talking about? Oh. The recent firmware update for the Wii added USB keyboard support in the Wii Shop Channel and on the Wii Message Board, but not in the web browser (Internet Channel). The unfinished nature of the support is probably why it was so low-key. Hey, that was unintentional. Low-key keyboard support? Get it?

I’m going to sleep now.

Also, of note, I don’t even think keyboard support was announced as included in this update. My guess is they tried to slip this in under the radar and when opera updates, they’ll be announcing full on keyboard support.
