On the heels of Silicon Knights lawsuits against Epic and the Unreal Engine 3.0, we now have word that Digital Extremes, makers of Unreal Championship and the currently in development Dark Sector have railed off some complaints about Unreal Engine 3.0

Scott Sinclair, lead director at Digital Extremes, had the following to say, “A lot of promises were made about the Unreal III engine, particularly on PS3, but as we see now, the time frames haven’t been met and now a lot of games using it are being held up.”.

I have always heard that the Unreal Engine editors were rather easy to use, but I am wondering if the technological advantages of the platform are bringing difficulties. This seems a bit different from the Too Human, Silicon Knights story, because this is a PS3 game, but Unreal Tournament 3 (it is developed in house) is coming to the PS3 first over the 360, so it just seems strange to blame it on the PS3.

We will follow up on the story when we get more information.

Having UT3 coming from Epic itself fits with the Too Human complaint relating to Gears of War. Gears was finished in-house before the UE3 tech was released to licensees, Silicon Knights said. If the best PS3 UE3 version is kept in house until UT3 is done, then I think licensees have a valid complaint, but probably not a valid lawsuit.

Then again, do they want the UE3 technology before it’s fully baked via Epic’s game?

Game companies are seeing what Windows software authors have lived in fear of for years. When the platform creator is also writing competing software for it, guess who’s going to get dibs on the highest-performing features of the platform, and may not even release to others how it gets that high performance. It ain’t gonna be you. Welcome to Microsoft.

but isn’t Bio Shock running on the Unreal 3 engine?

Maybe it’s not the engine but the developers.

So was Digital Extremes hired direct form Epic to make UT3? Kind of like working directly for the engine creators? If so, I would think they would get the best and most current updates, especially since the name of the game has the name of ther freaking engine in it. Epic wouldn’t want any bad press or bad graphics from UT3 b/c of something they did. Not only that but it would add credence to Silicon Knights complaint.

Though maybe it is just not working well on the PS3. I mean, I did hear that R6Vegas performs better on the 360, and that is using Unreal Engine 3.0. Maybe it was Sony promises that are screwing things up?
