The 60GB PS3′s Have Left The Building
Sony reports that their warehouses that were chock full of the 60GB PS3 model when the 80GB model was announced in July have now run dry of them. They’ve all been shipped out to retail, which basically means people have been buying them at their clearance $499.99 price point. I for one am surprised it took less than two months to clear these things out, but again we’re talking about shipping to retail and not selling out at retail just yet. Folks who want hardware-supported backwards compatibility in their PS3 should pick up the last remaining units at retail now.
The new 80GB models, you probably know, have only software backwards compatibility. Sony has said updating the firmware for backwards compatibility in the newer models is not a priority, though.
Some believe that once the 60GB models are entirely sold out the 80GB model will be discounted, but Sony obviously won’t admit to that just yet. Sony’s Dave Karraker is quoted as saying “We won’t be making any further announcements … until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated.” He’s not even saying they’re going to make a decision at that point, just that they’re not going to announce anything until later on.
