Son of Seller’s Remorse Part II: The Return

Submitted by on August 7, 2007 – 9:30 pm8 Comments

I’ve mentioned seller’s remorse before, and you’ve commiserated. Last week, I broke down and ordered a replacement copy of Viewtiful Joe, completing my collection of good Viewtiful Joe games: that is to say, all of them except for Red Hot Rumble. Now, I can play through the game on Adult and start unlocking other playable characters, but unfortunately, Devil May Cry‘s Dante didn’t appear in the game until the PS2 version, so I’ll have to make do with the Dante parody character, Alastor.

After my recent recovery of Mario Kart: Double Dash, I’m left only with Eternal Darkness to pick up, but realistically, I’ll probably not get that one. I was considering picking up P.N. 03 though, despite very mixed reviews. Anybody have anything to say about that one?

PN 03 was complete shit. Terrible game. Do yourself a favor and stay away.

I would get Eternal Darkness instead. I bought it used a while back (my copy walked away…) and it seems to be damaged. So I need to buy it again.

    It’s that good.

PN03 is a great game with caveats.

You have to understand what it is and is not.
Its NOT an adventure game. Its NOT a stealth game. Its not even a 3rd person shooter although you’ll expect it to act like one…..it won’t.

Its a bizarre amalgamation of an old school 2D shooter re-envisioned in a 3rd person setting mish mashed with GUN Valkyrie meets Ikuruga.

The point of this game is to upgrade your suit and to get high scores. The point is NOT simply to finish the game.

If you don’t expect it to control like a 3rd person shooter(aiming, strafing, run n gun, etc), but rather like a valkyrie style game (evade left/right, roll left/right, back flip/front flip, etc), you’ll be fine.

Just chill, let the techno beats wash over you as you chain together kills to max your high score. Its not hard to move forward, killing the robots one by one, but its hard to play this game well, stringing together kills for max points. It takes old school skills and precision most people don’t bother with today. Because of this, a lot of people don’t understand it, and thats ok. This game is like a wild ethnic cuisine that you’ll either love or hate, but only the truly adventure can hope to appreciate if they are willing to give it half a chance.

It’s not for the faint of heart. this game is the hardest of the hardcore. And the levels are supposed to be bland so don’t sweat them, this is not about exploration, or anything like that, but rather, all about ballet style evasion and returning fire to kill robots as fast as you can. Its totally awesome, but you may hate it. Does that make any sense at all?

    Like I said, PN 03 sucks. ;P

I can understand having differences, but holding PN 03 anywhere near Eternal Darkness isn’t possible. If you want to play something with style, I would suggest Rez.

Eternal Darkness has one of the best tellings of a story I have seen in some time. It really should not be overlooked.

“I can understand having differences, but holding PN 03 anywhere near Eternal Darkness isn’t possible. ”

Comparing PN03 to Eternal Darkness is like comparing Donkey Kong to Super Mario Bros. They simply aren’t comparable (efforts to compare it to incomparable games (like splinter cell) is exactly why PN03 got such poor reviews) but they are both great games. Super Mario Bros is just much easier to get into for the softcore, much like PN03 is very challenging to get into due to the fact that what it is and what you would expect it to be are so drastically different. A gamer with an open mind and a desire for skill based hi-score gameplay will fine A LOT to enjoy in PN03. Anyone looking for another cookie cutter 3rd person shooter with a predestined control scheme and predictable gameplay will be sadly disappointed.

Sounds fascinating. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for it while bargain hunting.

Yeah, for $5-10 you can’t go wrong with PN03. I paid $7 for it a year or 2 ago for a new one in the bin. Great game if you can understand why the controls are the way they are.

I’ve played PN03 for 5 minutes, so I have no room to judge.

But Eternal Darkness is a must for GCN. I would put it in my top 5 for GCN.
