Mmm. Moony.
More gothic goodness is inbound for the Wii Virtual Console. According to the ESRB website, Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, originally on NES, has been given a rating, which means Nintendo’s prepared to release it. That rating, by the way, is E. This would make it the third Castlevania game on the platform, and of course the third Castlevania game on the platform that I’ll be buying.

Simon’s Quest was a pioneering episode in the series as the first appearance of branching paths and RPG elements, which didn’t become a mainstay of the series until 1997′s Symphony of the Night for PS1 and Saturn. The game let you buy upgrades for your whip and an assortment of subweapons, including the holy water, which became an important tool for not only destroying break-away blocks to uncover hidden areas, but also determining which blocks in the castle were illusionary, and would send you tumbling down to repeat a large section of the place over and over again.

Two things that will always hit me about this game: how ominous it was the first time I read, “What a horrible night to have a curse” pop up on the screen, and how confused I was when told to process Dracula’s rib. What?

That makes me wonder if they’ll fix that in this release, the way they did in the PC release.
