Service.xbox.com Launches

Joystiq notes that service.xbox.com has launched, citing it as an extremely convenient way to register one’s console, see if it’s eligible for a free warranty repair, and even get $5 off an out-of-warranty repair job.
This all sounds great, right? That’s what I thought until I noticed that the article mock-bemoans the fact that they won’t have to wait on hold with Microsofts “crack customer service team”. This implies that until this new site just launched there wasn’t a way to get help for your busted 360 online. You had to wait on the phone?! Everyone on the podcasts I listen to who has had one or more 360′s die has always said they had to “call Microsoft”.
Anyone else feel the hand-to-forehead amazement that the richest and most powerful software company on the planet that prides itself on having killer web and non-web programming tools only just now set up a website for at least starting the process of making returns for its system?
