Rock Band Now Coming to a PS2 Near You

Rock Band, the game that is being developed by the creators of Guitar Hero, is now coming to the Playstation 2, according to Harmonix. The announcement was made at the German Leipzig Gaming Event. The game will get many of the modes of play that are in the 360 and PS3 versions of the game along with some new gameplay themes. Also, it looks as if the European release of Rock Band will get a fair amount of localized content, through the on-disc material as well as through downloads.
I just don’t understand this move. Well, I do and I don’t. I understand that Harmonix is doing this, because there are far more PS2 units on the market vs. PS3 units. And if you want to maximize your return on investment, you go to the platform with a large install base. But at the same time, you are canabalizing the game from its next gen counterpart. Think about it, most PS3 owners are PS2 owners. You get the game cheaper and still get a great experience, barring the online downloads.
We also have several new songs announced for the game taking us to 26 on disc songs so far.
Rolling Stones — “Gimme Shelter”
Deep Purple — “Highway Star”
The Clash — “Should I Stay or Should I Go”
Faith No More — “Epic”
Smashing Pumpkins — “Cherub Rock”
Radiohead — “Creep”
Beastie Boys — “Sabotage”
Jet — “Are You Gonna Be My Girl”
OK Go — “Here It Goes Again”
Nine Inch Nails — “The Hand That Feeds”
