Quake III Arena for DS “restrictive.”

Craig Harris at IGN reports from John Carmack’s keynote at QuakeCon that Quake III Arena “may be” planned for Nintendo DS, but is unlikely to use the touch screen aiming that made Metroid Prime Hunters possible on the system, instead going for a more “restrictive” control scheme using the D-pad: more like Doom, less like Metroid. It’s not clear why Carmack would come right out and say, effectively, that his game is going to be near-unplayable crap, but there it is. It should be pretty clear to developers by now that you either need something with mouse-like functionality and, if that’s not available, dual-analog control for a FPS to work out properly.
Then again, maybe it’s a side-scroller, right? That would be… unusual.
