Ones to Watch on the Wii in September 2007.
Let’s have a look at the Wii’s release schedule in the wake of Metroid Prime 3. See that? You thought that, at last, now that Metroid was released late last month, you could stop hearing about it. But no, that is not to be. So, now that we’re post-Metroid, what’s next to really excite Wii owners? Is it Guilty Gear? Nope, that one keeps rolling backward, now tentatively marked for October. Mario Galaxy? No, that’s November. How about Smash Bros? Nope, you’ll see that one in December, if you play your cards right. What is there to buy this month? Well, if you want something fresh, you’ll get your fix from Konami’s Dewy’s Adventure, and if you want something a little heavier, maybe Dragon Blade will be your thing. Of course, there’s always DDR.
DEWY’S ADVENTURE. Platform Adventure; Konami, September. OFFICIAL SITE.
Dewy’s Adventure is being assembled by Konami’s Elebits team. Elebits was one of the first really original titles on the platform, and while it had some launch-window issues (mostly visually), it’s still considered one of the strongest titles on the system. Dewy’s Adventure is showing a lot more visual polish, and going by the trailers, only one song. It’s a very catchy song, though, so maybe that’s OK.
The mechanic behind the game might seem familiar at first: you tilt the world and magic drop of water Dewy slides around. You hit him with heat or cold to vaporize or freeze him in order to overcome various obstacles, fight bosses… things like that. This game looks OK, but having never played it, I can’t speak to the controls, which in a game like this will make or break the whole mechanic. Let’s hope for another strong showing from Konami.
DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION HOTTEST PARTY. Rhythm; Konami, September 25th. OFFICIAL SITE
DDR is somewhat of a household name in gaming at this point. Those with more widespread consoles may not be aware that the Gamecube only got one Dance Dance Revolution game called DDR: Mario Mix. The game’s demand far exceeded supply, making the game very pricey online for a while there until Nintendo stepped up manufacturing for the Nintendo-themed dance title.
That said, the DDR games that look really great, such as the 360′s Ultramix, never saw the light of day on the Wii, and it seems they never will. Early images of Hottest Party looked OK, and it wasn’t long ago that it started to look like utter crap. This shaky-cam footage is surprising in that it appears Konami was paying attention to all of our whining, and the game appears to have come together in a more consistent way with the kind of product they’ve produced in the past. Yes, DDR is casual. But it sure looks like fun.
DRAGON BLADE: WRATH OF FIRE. Action Adventure; Land Ho!, September. OFFICIAL SITE
Aside from this trailer, there isn’t a whole lot of information to be had on Dragon Blade. It looks as though they’re trying to appeal to the God of War slash Devil May Cry audience on this one, but it’s hard to figure these things out just by watching a trailer. What we do know is that it’s a Wii exclusive, and that you use fiery swordplay and spells to fight monsters in a very freeform kind of a way. I was very surprised to see this game when it was first announced and I will be watching it with some great interest.
IGN’s been giving the game some attention, doing feature articles and video footage for each of the six dragons in the game. You can check that out right here.
