Ones to Watch: August 2007 PS3 Releases

If you’re looking for an exclusive title coming in August that could be a hit, look no further than Warhawk. The only question is what flavor to buy — the retail release featuring documentary footage and a bluetooth headset or the direct download from the PlayStation Store. It’s not unfair to characterize this game as the PS3′s equivalent of SOCOM, encouraging gamers to pick up the retail version to get a wireless bluetooth headset and play online the way SOCOM enticed gamers to buy with a USB headset (which still works on the PS3 with both PS2 and PS3 titles thanks to the PS3′s backwards compatibility).
Madden NFL 08 will be the other big seller this month, hitting on 8/14. EA’s annual football juggernaut is criticized for having only incremental improvements year over year, but it still sells like crazy. Also coming on the 14th is Lair, a good-looking dragon flight and combat game that’s been getting hype from SCEA for a while. You can see it at GameTrailers or count’em 1, 2, 3, 4 behind-the-scenes videos at GameVideos. We’ve come a long way from CX2613.
That’s not enough for you? Hit the jump to see what else is on the way for this month.
High Stakes on the Vegas Strip: Poker Edition might be coming to the PlayStation Store with camera support and online multiplayer as soon as August 9th if IGN’s release list is any indication. With a name like this I’m betting this game from Sony Online Entertainment will become the first in a series if it sells. Joystiq had positive impressions so poker fans will like it, I’m sure. Take a look.
Other PSN titles that could appear are Snakeball, Everyday Shooter, and maybe the Blast Factor: Advanced Research add-on. SCE thinks a HD version of the Snake game everyone gets on their cell phone will be popular if they add on weaponry and other features, and Everyday Shooter was a hit with those who played it hands-on at E3 this year, letting them build the acoustic-guitar soundtrack as they played. Blast Factor: Advanced Research reaches out to buyers of the very first two-stick shooter on the system with new gameplay elements like asymmetrical arenas and new boss types. Take a look.
The long-delayed Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 could appear on the 21st of this month. GRAW 2 has been out on the Xbox 360 for a while now and one wonders if all the press about difficulties with the Unreal Engine 3 on the PS3 is a factor in the PS3 version delays. Ubisoft hopes this game enjoys good word of mouth like Rainbow Six: Vegas.
The last week of August has a full slate of games on it right now, with Dynasty Warriors: Gundam, Stuntman: Ignition, and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08. Gundam fans will at least rent their game if they liked the demo from the PlayStation Store. The new Stuntman demo on the Xbox 360 got praise on the Gamers With Jobs Conference Call podcast from those who liked the original, less forgiving version of the game on the PlayStation, so Ignition could be the jump-start that gets the franchise back on the road. And lastly Tiger Woods gives golf addicts something to look forward to.
