Due to rather dismal sales of the 360 in Japan (do they even know the console exists?), Sega is debating whether to even release Virtua Figher 5 in Japan. It will be getting a European launch as well as stateside, but Tohru Murayama had this to say today about the famed fighting series fifth entry:

“We haven’t decided if we’ll release Virtua Fighter 5 in Japan because of that. “But if we [can only release the game] for the US or EU markets, we just hope Virtua Fighter 5 will be a key title which encourages people to buy Xbox 360s.”

Not encouraging for the tens of people that bought Xbox 360 machines in Japan.

I have put an entire division of the company on the issue of Japan not buying the XBOX360. Ultimately we discovered that the problem lies in the fact that the Japanese alphabet does not have an equivalent letter for ‘X’. Thus the Japanese consumers are rather confused why we would sell a ‘Box’ for 400,000yen.

To rectify this issue Microsoft has been in contact with the Japanese Diet to pass legislation to introduce the letter ‘X’ into the Japanese language.
