Library of Congress Starts Video Game Preservation Project

library-congress-picture.jpgRecently, the Library of Congress received funding to start a massive electronic document preservation project. One of the grants involved in this project is the game preservation grant. The official name for this games preservation is called “Preserving Virtual Worlds”. Its focus is on historical games, electronic literature and virtual worlds. No word on what software will be included in the preservation project or if we as gamers will have any say in the matter, but it is nice to see that the government recognizes that games are part of our history and need to be preserved as such for future generations.

As a sidebar to this, I remember when I found my old NES box and hooked it up to play some Duck Hunt and Super Mario Brothers. My son, who was five at the time, asked if the game was older than me. It made me realize how much kids today don’t realize how far gaming has come in regards to graphics, story and sound. A project like this will let these youngsters know what paved the way for them.

I imagine they’d start with the firsts, like the original pinball machines and work their way along with the conceptual pioneers like Space War, Pong and Pac-Man. I would think it would take them a while to get to Super Mario Bros.
