Jack Thompson Takes Issue with Bioshock Commercial

Jack Thompson has crawled out from under the rock he has been hiding under, to complain about the Bioshock commercial that aired on Spike TV the other night. His complaint to the Federal Trade Commission, complains that Take Two and Rockstar played commercials for the violence laden game, Bioshock during the family hour (in the States, that is the 8-9PM hour on TV). This is the same kind of complaint that got cigarette advertisements off the air.

Two things from reading this come to mind. Jack Thompson is obsessed with Rockstar, because I had no clue that they were the designers behind Bioshock. I thought it was Irrational/2K Boston that created and designed the game. Secondly, Jack Thompson was all over this game commercial, but he missed what was on SpikeTV at the time of the advertisement. WWE Smackdown was on at that time. A show filled with giant men that kick the tar out of each other by wrestling and using pretty much anything at the side of the ring. Then you have the ladies that are dressed one step up from a stripper in a club (normally, but not always the case). But does JT notice any of that. Nope, just the Bioshock commercial. The fact that he tuned in to watch wrestling to get to this commercial makes the hypocrisy behind it all the better.

Thanks Jack for defending us from the violence of videogames. I guess I would be much safer jumping off my balcony, making sure to body slam my neighbor to the ground while I do it. Much safer than video games indeed.

Who hasn’t wanted to bodyslam one’s neighbor at least once?

It should also be noted that, SpikeTV being on cable, it is not subject to the same rules and standards as typical over-the-air broadcasts. The only reason you don’t see more vulgarity on cable is due to how advertisers react.

Take, for example, the South Park episode that had 130+ unedited s-bombs. The South Park guys weren’t sure they could get away with it, only because they thought their advertisers would cut and run. When they did approach their advertisers, they were cool with it, thus the episode aired unedited.

So, if JT thinks he can get anywhere with this, let him try. I’d love to see more fuel for the disbarment fire.
