History Repeats Itself With 5 Free Movies

Submitted by on August 10, 2007 – 7:00 am4 Comments

High def discsI’ve seen offers for 5 free movies with the purchase of the Xbox 360 HD DVD player or a Blu-ray player (including the PS3) at retailers these days. Back when DVDs came on the scene I distinctly remember the same kind of promotion, and a noticeably poorer selection. Remember how Stargate and Lost In Space were often on that list? While I like the first one, I never did see the critically panned second.

What early DVDs did you choose, and if you just jumped on board with these promotions, what high definition discs did you choose?

I’m ashamed to admit it, but here goes: Chicken Little, Corpse Bride, Resident Evil 2, Babel, and Kiss of the Dragon.

I thought that blu-ray list was a complete joke, with only ONE kids movie and far too many older films that are not going to look any better on blu-ray than they did on DVD. I think I would have rather received $10 credit at the PlayStation Store than any of those movies.

Since my ps3, when i get it, is getting hooked up to my SDTV, the discs are kindof useless to me.

Yeah, I remember the five free DVD giveaway. I bought my DVD player from 800.com (now part of dvdempire.com), and they had a great deal on a DVD player, $50 worth of free movies from their store, and then the five DVDs that you mailed away for.

I got no choice in them. Lost in Space was pretty good. Stargate was an A-B disc where I had to flip the disc in the middle of the movie a-la laserdisc style. Six Days, Seven Nights was better than I thought it would be. Lethal Weapon 4 which was probably the worst of the series, but some fun nevertheless. I cannot remember the last movie of the bunch, so it is safe to say that it was not good.

But with that $50 credit at 800.com, I bought The Matrix, Blade Runner and Chariots of Fire, so it was not all bad.
