Yesterday, courtesy of my local B. Dalton that is going out of business, I received a free issue of The Official 360 Xbox Magazine for purchasing a bunch of books half price. That is probably not the exact title of the magazine, but that isn’t as important as the Beautiful Katamari demo that was included with the magazine. I don’t know why, but I have been a fan of this quirky title since I heard of the first game. Simplistic gameplay that is ridiculously addictive.

Well, the demo only gives you three minutes to do your thing, but as with the the other Katamari games, the mechanics are the same. Use the analog sticks to control the prince and the Katamari. The King of All Cosmos shows up for the demo too and tells you about how great the game will be when it is released.

Graphically, the game looks like it has had some spit and polish done to it, but overall this looks like the same game of a few years ago. It did look great in 720p and nary a jagged edge in sight. These are the days that I love my big screen HDTV. The music for the level did not stand out, but considering all the other games have had stellar soundtracks, this one should be the same.

There were no hints about the type of achievements to expect, and the demo did not give you any multiplayer access. I would of like to have had a way to test the multiplayer capabilities of the game, but we will just have to wait until it hits Live for a full demo.

At the end of the demo, it gives you a Fall 2007 release date, but nothing more finite. It should release before the end of the year as Microsoft has listed it as a fall game for their console. It is 360 exclusive, but one has to wonder if it will be a timed exclusive as the game has normally made a home on a Sony system.

Timed exclusive and/or re-named exclusive. Come on. There is simply not enough people on 360 to fund these out-of-the-box concept games. (And so goes Viva Pinata to the DS.) The only reason this franchise even breathes is because of the gigantic userbase of the PS2. Namco would be slitting the franchise’s throat if it signed a total exlcusive deal for Xbox.
